City of Andalusia Converts to Cost-Saving LED Lighting Solutions with the Help of Whitehead & Associates Expertise

The city of Andalusia, Alabama, is host to a vibrant community and has been dubbed “the heart of south Alabama” because of its hospitality. Recreational sports flourish in the area providing fun and entertainment for all on golf courses, baseball fields, tennis courts, and more. Andalusia is home to the annual World Championship Domino Tournament.

Whitehead & Associates provided its expertise to help convert the city to a more cost effective lighting solution. The lighting retrofit project for the city of Andalusia began by replacing the 1000 watt parking lot fixtures with City of Andalusia AL_lightLED area fixtures which only consume 86 watts.

The second wave of changes occurred when the city replaced the 150 watt streetlamps with LED cobrahead light fixtures, which utilize 30 percent less energy and offer a more uniform light pattern.

“We are always looking at ways to become more efficient. These LED streetlights and other lights that we installed are going to save us money in energy costs and maintenance, and we are happy with the results,” said Earl Johnson, Mayor of Andalusia, Alabama.

The retrofit is expected to increase the lifecycle of these lights by more than 10 years and will reduce ongoing maintenance costs. Further, the energy savings extends through the entire life of the equipment returning the cost of the initial investment in less than five years.

Johnson said the city is not done with its commitment to energy and cost savings. “We are doing this in baby steps. Whitehead has been very helpful to us in determining what we can afford to do and what results we can expect.”
